Russia begins to ban genetically modified organisms

The upper house of the Russian parliament Federal Commission on Wednesday approved a bill that prohibit in Russia planting transgenic plants and transgenic animal feeding, in addition to scientific use.

Russian sputnik news reported that the bill also provides that, in view of the impact of genetically modified products to humans and the environment, to prohibit the import of genetically modified goods. Those countries that produce genetically modified products are exported to Russia and are required to register in accordance with the new law.

The act also provides for the use of genetically modified organisms will be subject to what kind of punishment. Violation of the law will be fined 500 thousand rubles (about 52 thousand yuan).
