Vice Minister Qu Dongyu Meets WTO Deputy Director-General Alan Wm. Wolff

On April 19, Vice Minister Qu Dongyu met with WTO Deputy Director-General Alan Wm. Wolff, who was in Beijing to attend the 2018 China Agricultural Outlook Conference. They exchanged ideas about current international economy and trade and the multilateral trade system.

According to Vice Minister Qu, the Chinese government gives high priority to work related to agriculture, rural areas, and rural residents, and prioritizes the development of agriculture and rural areas. In addition, China is now implementing the rural vitalization strategy, accelerating the modernization of agriculture and rural areas, and promoting the Internet Plus initiative and e-commerce to push forward agricultural development and increase rural residents’ income. It will unswervingly promote an open global economy. This year, the first import expo will be held in the country and a series of practical measures will be launched to expand its opening-up, support economic globalization, and fight against trade protectionism. China attaches great importance to the role of WTO, firmly supports the multilateral trade system, and is ready to participate in and promote WTO agricultural talks.

Mr. Alan Wm. Wolff expressed his thanks for efforts made by China to support the multilateral trade system. As the system went into a new stage, he said, WTO members need to keep aware of the reality, and promote reform of the multilateral trade system. Meanwhile, he also expressed the hope that China would play a more significant role in future negotiations.

Before their meeting, Vice Minister Qu Dongyu accompanied Mr. Wolff in a visit to the National Agricultural Scientific Data Sharing Center and introduced to him the ministry’s project to bring information technology to villages and rural households, part of its efforts to alleviate poverty by developing agriculture-related e-commerce in rural areas.
